Forestier Racing by Panis will start the 94th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans from the front row of the LMP2 grid after reigning ELMS Champion Esteban Masson stormed through in Hyperpole 2 with a 3m32.855 lap, 0.387s ahead of the no28 IDEC Sport of Job Van Uitert, the Dutch driver pushing hard to claim a front row position at the chequered flag with a 3m33.242 lap. However, a penalty incurred during yesterday’s qualifying for impeding the no58 Garage 59 McLaren, will drop the no29 Oreca down one place, promoting the IDEC Sport Oreca to P1 on the grid (Stewards Decision no84).
The first 20-minute session saw 15 cars take part, with the top 10 going through to Hyperpole 2. Tom Dillmann set the fastest lap in the session with a 3m33.762 lap time. The five cars that were eliminated were the two United Autosports Orecas, the no26 Vector Sport, the no37 CLX Motorsport and then no9 Proton Competition.
The final Hyperpole session was just 15-minutes, with the ten cars going head to head Van Uitert made an early bid for the top spot with a 3m33.689 but Masson put in a 3m33.107 to stake his claim to pole. The no30 Duqueine Team Oreca and the no14 TDS Racing were also in the fight.
However, the final minute of the session saw a flurry of fast lap times, with Alex Quinn in the no4 Crowdstrike Racing by APR go second with a 3m33.628 just as Esteban Masson extended his lead with a 3m32.855 lap. Jack Doohan put the no24 Nielsen Racing Oreca on the front row with a 3m33.510, with Nick Yelloly posting the third fastest lap of 3mm33.578 as the chequered flag was shown.
Job Van Uitert was lying in 5th but on a fast final lap. The Dutch driver posted a best overall sector 3 time to finish the session in second with a 3m33.242, pushing Doohan and Yelloly onto the second row, with Quinn heading row 3 alongside the Duqueine Team Oreca of Julien Andlauer. In LMGT3 the no62 Team Qatar Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG had a reprieve after finishing 16th in the qualifying session yesterday. The no34 Racing Team Turkey Corvette received a penalty for a technical infringement, with all times being deleted, meaning the no62 Mercedes-AMG was now 15th and into Hyperpole 2. The other ELMS car in the LMGT3 category was the no74 Kessel Racing Ferrari.
In Hyperpole 1 the no74 Ferrari progresses when Lorenzo Patrese finished 9th after the 20-minute session by Julien Hanses could only manage 12th in the Team Qatar by Iron Lynx car and was eliminated from the final Hyperpole session.
In Hyperpole 2 Dennis Marshall had several laps deleted due to Track Limits but the German managed to secure 7th place on the grid for the no74 Ferrari with a 3m54.677 at the chequered flag after languishing at the back of the field for the rest of the session.
The LMGT3 pole went to the no27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage with Mattia Drudi setting a 3m52.433, nearly a second ahead of Alessio Rovera in the no21 Vista AF Corse Ferrari.
Friday will see no track action for the competitors, with the next session being the 15-minute warm up session on Saturday morning before the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans gets underway at 16h00.
