ELMS at Spa-Francorchamps – Facts and Figures

In just two weeks the European Le Mans Series will gather for Round 4 of the 2023 season in Belgium. The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps has been a feature of the ELMS calendar since 2016 and this year will be the 8th edition of the Belgian event.

Here are some facts and figures from the seven previous races held at Spa-Francorchamps since 2016

  1. The first race in 2016 was round 5 of the six-race season.The first edition of the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps was won by the no21 DragonSpeed Oreca 05-Nissan driven by Henrik Hedman, Nicolas Lapierre and Ben Hanley. All three drivers are will be competing in the 2023 edition of the race, but only Henrik Hedman is racing for DragonSpeed, Lapierre is racing for COOL Racing and Hanley for Nielsen Racing.
  2. In 2016 the LMGTE category was won by the no66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458 Italia of Rob Smith, Rory Butcher and Andrea Bertolini, while the LMP3 class was won by the no9 Graff Ligier JS P3-Nissan of Enzo Guibbert, Paul Petit and Eric Trouillet. Eric Trouillet is racing this year in LMP3 for Ultimate.
  3. United Autosports is the most successful team at Spa-Francorchamps, with four wins in LMP2 (2018/2019/2020/2022) and two in LMP3 (2018/2020).Three of those wins have seen the crews go on to become ELMS champions.
  4. Phil Hanson have won the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps four times in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
  5. Mikkel Jensen won the 2022 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in LMGTE for Kessel Racing alongside Conrad Grunewald and Frederik Schandorff.This victory was significant because Jensen became the first driver in ELMS history to win an ELMS race in all three categories. Jensen won three LMP3 races on his way to the 2019 LMP3 title with Eurointernational. In 2020 he won the 4 Hours of Portimao with G-Drive Racing, finishing third overall for the 2020 LMP2 title.

  1. The longest race was held in 2019, with the winners completing 707.39km or 101 laps of the 7.0039km circuit.
  2. The shortest race was held in 2018 when heavy rain caused several safety cars and red flags. Only 280.16km, or 40 laps, were completed when the race was stopped, with half points were awarded

The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps is Round 4 of the 2023 European Le Mans Series and it will be held on Sunday 24 September.
