New LMP2 Pro/Am Trophy for 2021

One of the changes that will come into force at the start of the 2021 European Le Mans Series will be the inclusion of the Pro/Am Trophy within the LMP2 class.

This trophy is for any LMP2 crew that includes at least one bronze rated driver, with seven of the sixteen full season class entries set to contest the new award.

The seven cars, and the bronze rated driver, entered for the LMP2 Pro Am European Le Mans Series Trophy are –

  1. 21 DragonSpeed USA Oreca 07-Gibson: Henrik Hedman (SWE)
  2. 25 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01-Gibson: John Falb (USA)
  3. 27 Idec Sport Oreca 07-Gibson: Dwight Merriman (USA)
  4. 29 Ultimate Oreca 07-Gibson: François Heriau (FRA)
  5. 34 Racing Team Turkey Oreca 07-Gibson: Salih Yoluc (TUR)
  6. 37 Cool Racing Oreca 07-Gibson: Alexandre Coigny (FRA)
  7. 39 Graff Oreca 07-Gibson: Arnold Robin (FRA)

The seven Pro/Am cars will also be eligible to score points in the overall LMP2 classification.

Championship points will be awarded the same as in the overall LMP2 classifications, with 25 points for the first Pro/Am car, 18 for second and so on.

If the fastest LMP2 Pro/Am entry is also the fastest LMP2 car overall in qualifying, they will also receive 1 point for pole position in both the Pro/Am and overall LMP2 classifications.

The seven bronze drivers who are confirmed in the LMP2 class all have an impressive career resume:

Henrik Hedman returns to the ELMS with DragonSpeed in 2021 after a season away. The Swedish driver raced in LMP2 between 2016 and 2019, scoring two victories in that time at Le Castellet in 2019 and Spa-Francorchamps in 2016, as well as several other podiums.

2017 LMP3 Champion John Falb switched to LMP2 in 2019, with his best finish to date being a 5th place at Portimão in 2019 and at Le Castellet in 2020.

Dwight Merriman will make his ELMS debut in 2021, with the American taking three LMP2 podiums in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship in 2020. He got 2021 off to a great start with an LMP2 victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona alongside Paul Loup Chatin and also scored a couple of wins in the Asian Le Mans Series.

LMP3 race winner François Heriau will make his LMP2 debut with Ultimate this year, moving up to the larger prototypes with his LMP3 teammates Matthieu and Jean-Baptiste Lahaye.

2020 24 Hours of Le Mans LMGTE AM Champion Salih Yoluc will also make his LMP2 debut this season with Racing Team Turkey. The Turkish driver took a total of four class victories, including Le Mans, in the WEC last season. He last raced in the ELMS in 2017 where he finished the season as Vice Champion, with one win at Silverstone and five further podium finishes.

Alexandre Coigny raced in both the WEC and ELMS in 2020, recording two ELMS podiums, with a season best 2nd place finish at Spa-Francorchamps in both the ELMS and WEC. Coigny will race once again in 2021 for Cool Racing alongside his teammates Nicolas Lapierre and Antonin Borga.

Arnold Robin moves up to LMP2 from LMP3 with Graff, taking a season best finish of 4th at Spa-Francorchamps last season. He makes the move to the larger prototypes with his LMP3 teammates Maxime Robin and Vincent Capillaire.

The opening round of the 2021 European Le Mans Series will be the 4 Hours of Barcelona on the 16-18April.
