The battle will be a straight fight between the no19 Cool Racing Ligier of 4 Hours of Barcelona and 4 Hours of Red Bull Ring winners Matt Bell, Nicolas Maulini and Niklas Kruetten and the no4 DKR Engineering Duqueine of reigning Michelin Le Mans Cup LMP3 champion Laurents Hörr.

The no19 Cool Racing Ligier currently holds a slender 5-point lead on 98 points to the no4 Duqueine’s 93 points, finishing on the podium in Paul Ricard and Spa-Francorchamps in addition to the wins in the opening two races of the season.

Laurents Hörr has shared the car with three drivers this season. Alain Berg in Round 1, Jean-Philippe Dayraut for Rounds 2 and 3, taking the win at Paul Ricard, and then partnering with 17-year-old Mathieu De Barbuat in Monza and Spa, taking victory in both events. Added to that, Hörr has taken the extra point for pole position in all but the opening race of the 2021 season.

Victory for either team in Portugal will secure the title, even if the no19 Cool Racing Ligier took the first pole of the season.

In addition to being crowned European Champions, there is also a place on the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans grid up for grabs for the winning team. The LMP3 title race will be one to watch in Portimão and it is certainly going to be too close to call.
