What the Drivers Say....Race Winners

ELMS - 21/07/2019 - Jeff CARTER

Following the 4 Hours of Barcelona the winning crews from LMP2, LMP3 and LMGTE gave their thoughts on the first ELMS race to finish after sunset.

Roman Rusinov
no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01-Gibson – LMP2

“It was quite hard at the beginning of the race as Michelin seemed to have an advantage in the beginning with tyre management but I think we managed a good double stint and we did a good operation during the pitstop so we made up some positions.  I then gave the car to my two teammates, who both did a brilliant job.  I like Barcelona, I won here in 2009, it’s cool!.”

Job Van Uitert
no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01-Gibson – LMP2

“My stint was quite good, the car felt nice, our engineer did a great job during the long week to manage everything and I think we showed that in our pace during the race. The traffic was quite hard here but it is good to be here in Barcelona, which is nice venue and the track is fun to drive.  It feels great after Le Mans to be back on the podium again.”

Jean-Eric Vergne
no26 G-Drive Racing Aurus 01-Gibson – LMP2

“I am very happy. When I took the car I had a 40 second lead and I finished over a lap ahead.  It was an amazing performance; I am so happy to be here racing in LMP2, I love this car, I love this racing.

“It was great to be back after the disappointment of Le Mans, I think I clearly have the best two teammates and we have a fantastic team, which we have shown this weekend.  I have to thank Roman and Job but also all the mechanics and engineers because everytime we go out there we have a fantastic car.”

Martin Hippe
No13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier JS P3-Nissan – LMP3

“For sure, winning here was the target but it was not clear the whole race.  It was a very interesting race, a hard race for us.  The start wasn’t perfect for me; I was stuck in the traffic and the marbles. Then the car felt good, I could do some good lap times and then give the car to Nigel.  I trust him fully, I know what he is able to do and I was pretty confident that he would do the maximum that was possible.”

Nigel Moore
No13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier JS P3-Nissan –LMP3

“It was a good race, a hard one and unexpected in a way. We’ve struggled all year with the car and we are still struggling a little bit, but when it comes down to race pace we’ve got the best driver line up and the consistency.  In the first two races we’ve started towards the back but slowly progress our way up the field and make no errors.

“A big thank you to the team, they’ve done a mega job.  A big well done to Martin, driving with him is mega, we both want the same car which makes thing easier and we both do what we have to do.”

Fabien Lavergne
No51 Luzich Racing Ferrari F488 GTE EVO – LMGTE

“I managed to do a good start and I tried to go to the outside. I was looking for the lead but an LMP3 missed the brakes and I had to go wide, so I dropped to P4 and I had to recover.   The pace was really good and I was able to overtake.  In the end I think it was a good stint.

“I pitted under the first full course yellow for new tyres because in the beginning it was a little bit difficult with the tyres and the heat.  After that I had really good pace and I could open a gap. It was a good race.”

Nicklas Nielsen
No51 Luzich Racing Ferrari F488 GTE EVO – LMGTE

“Honestly the car was really, really good, my stint was fantastic. I think this shows how consistent we were, we were running ahead of the LMP3 as well. Fabien did a good job in the beginning and Ale did a good job at the end; we can be really happy with this result.  So a big thanks to Luzich and Ferrari for a great car.”

Alessandro Pier Guidi
No51 Luzich Racing Ferrari F488 GTE EVO - LMGTE

“Today was a very good job. During the whole weekend we knew the key for the race would be the tyre management because with this track and in these temperatures it was going to be very difficult. So we all worked hard in terms of setup to have this and we had a good compromise.   Fabien and Nicklas did an incredible job, we have a very strong line up, so that is probably fifty percent of the key of the result in this championship.  My teammates, Luzich and Ferrari did an incredible job.”
