Nielsen Racing Going for Gold in 2020

British team Nielsen Racing have been part of the ELMS / MLMC paddock since 2017 and the young team from Corby in Northamptonshire has certainly made its presence felt in those three years finishing as Michelin Le Mans Cup Vice Champions two years in a row and regular podium finishers in both series.

Nielsen Racing was founded in 2014 by David ‘Sven’ Thompson, who was well known for his work in Radicals and lead engineer at Greaves Motorsport on their LMP2 programme.

Success followed with multiple Radical SR1, SR3 and SR8 championship wins and a partnership with Nielsen Chemicals from the end of 2014 saw the team we know today formed.

In 2017 Nielsen Racing entered endurance racing with a single LMP3 Ligier JS P3-Nissan entered in the Michelin Le Mans Cup for British duo Tony Wells and Colin Noble. In their debut season they took one win at Monza and three second place finishes to complete the year as Vice Champions behind DKR Engineering.  On a domestic level the team went one better in the UK with a championship win in the Henderson UK Cup, which they repeated in 2018.

Success meant in 2018 Nielsen Racing turned their sights on the European Le Mans Series, running one LMP3 car in the ELMS and doubling their entry in the MLMC.  There was also a tie up with the legendary Ecurie Ecosse, which saw the team rebranded as Ecurie Ecosse / Nielsen for the 2018 season.

Once again the team were at the forefront of the Michelin Le Mans Cup, with Alasdair McCaig and Colin Noble taking the vice champions crown after scoring four podiums, including two wins at Spa-Francorchamps and Portimão, while Tony Wells and James Littlejohn finished 3rd in the championship, standing on the podium with their teammates at Paul Ricard, Spa and Portimão.

In the ELMS the competition proved to be a lot harder but Alex Kapadia, Christian Olsen and Colin Noble finished the season with three second place finishes under their belts, putting Ecurie Ecosse/Nielsen 4th overall at the end of the year.

The 2019 season saw the Nielsen racing name return, with a two-car entry in the ELMS and a single entry in the MLMC.  Tony Wells and Colin Noble teamed up again to compete in both series, while James Littlejohn would share the car with Nobuya Yamanaka for the first two ELMS races, with little success, with Nick Adcock joining Littlejohn for the final four races with a best finish of 4th in Portugal.

Also, in a change for 2019, Noble and Wells would be racing a Norma M30, while the team would run a Ligier JS P3 for Littlejohn and his two teammates.

Colin Noble and Tony Wells took four podium finishes in the MLMC but no wins.  The British pair took second place finishes in Barcelona and Portimão and finished third at Paul Ricard and Monza to finish the season in 3rd overall.

Success in the ELMS was hard to find with just one podium finish at Spa-Francorchamps coming their way and the no7 Norma M30 finished the season in 5th overall while the no8 Ligier finished 9th.

At the start of 2020, success for Nielsen Racing came when the British team took the Asian Le Mans Series LMP3 title when Colin Noble and Tony Wells finished second in the fourth and final round in Thailand to secure the LMP3 crown.

Nielsen Racing will once again be going for gold in 2020, with a two car entry in both the ELMS and MLMC.
