LM GTE - 26/11/2019 - Sophie LIGER
At only 22 years old, the young Danish driver made his debut in car racing in 2016 after a few years in karting, where he became European vice-champion in 2014.
In 2016, he started car racing as an official Audi Sport Racing Academy driver as well as racing in the ADAC Formula 4, where he was crowned “Rookie champion”. In 2017, he kept racing in F4, Karting and also in GT participating in the Ferrari Challenge. 2018 was a busy season for Nicklas, racing in the Ferrari Challenge, GT Open and Karting, winning numerous races that year.
In 2019 Nielsen made his debut in European Le Mans Series with the n°51 Luzich Racing Ferrari 488 GTE EVO and alongside Alessandro Pier Guidi, FIA World Endurance GT Drivers’ Champion, and Fabien Lavergne. After taking four wins and one third position, the trio was crowned 2019 LMGTE ELMS Champions.
A few months ago, in Silverstone, the Danish driver also made his debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship, racing in the n°83 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE EVO alongside François Perrodo and Emmanuel Collard.
Nicklas showed great pace all season long and was able to learn from the best thanks to the experience of Alessandro Pier Guidi. Thanks to his skill behind the wheel and winning the title in his debut season, Nicklas Nielsen was rewarded with the title of “Rookie of the Year”.
Previous drivers who have won the title “Rookie of the Year” have gone on to a great career in Endurance. The best example is Thomas Laurent, the 2016 ELMS Rookie of the Year who is now driving for Signatech Alpine in the FIA World Endurance Championship and will make his debuts at the wheel of an LMP1 with Toyota Gazoo Racing during the Official Rookie test in Bahrain next month. 2019 ELMS LMP2 Vice Champion Job Van Uitert was also Rookie of the Year in 2018 after winning the LMP3 category that season, securing a pole position and a podium finish for Racing Team Nederlands on his World Endurance Championship debut at Silverstone this year.
Nicklas Nielsen is definitely one of the Endurance rising stars and he will be one of the drivers to follow closely next season.
