Focus on the season of Aston Martin Racing: Interview with Andrew Howard (Driver and Team Principal)

ELMS - 25/11/2016

Aston Martin Racing competed for a full season in European Le Mans Series for the first time. The British team ran the n°99 Aston Martin Vantage driven by Andrew Howard, founder of Beechdean Dairy Ice Cream, official AMR drivers Darren Turner and Alex MacDowall. The team ended the season as ELMS Champions in LMGTE with 98 points, scoring two victories at Silverstone and Estoril. We have met with Andrew Howard for a review of this season full of action and drama.

2016 review: “The season was really good with the Team and Drivers titles at the end. We already did some races in ELMS in 2010 and we did Estoril last year to discover the championship. This season we came back as a team for the whole year and we competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Am class. It was unexpected to win the title this year for our first season in ELMS. We just wanted to be competitive. We arrived at Estoril for the final with one goal, to keep our second position. The aim was to finish and at the end we were able not only to win the race but also the titles. It is just unbelievable!”

The 2017 season: “We want to compete again in European Le Mans Series. We have to learn all the tracks, the championship and also to discover the other teams. It took us a year and we will be back stronger.”

The 2017 cars: “We don’t know yet how many cars we will run but there will be at least one. In the meantime we will also run two or three cars in British GT.”

The 2017 goals: “We will compete again in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We did it this year and it was fantastic! We learnt a lot and I’m happy to go back next year thanks to our invitation following our title. My goal is to stand on the Le Mans podium one day.”

ELMS: “It’s a great championship that gets bigger and bigger. But I would like to see more GTE. The level is really good but we have to be careful that all the drivers have this level.”

Professional life (Founder of Beechdean Dairy ice Cream) VS Team principal and driver life: “It’s hard to balance both activities. I’m lucky to have great people on which I can count in my company as well as in the team. It’s true that it takes lot of time. You have to separate the activities: when you are at work you focus on it and the same when I’m with the team. I’m lucky to be passionate by my two activities and to do the things I like.”
