A look back at the 2015 GTC season

ELMS - 09/11/2015 - Gaëlle CHOUTEAU

TDS Racing, European Champions ! - TDS Racing and AF Corse shared all the five race wins in the GTC category, which featured seven cars, four manufacturers and 23 drivers.

BMW tops the category

French drivers Eric Dermont, Dino Lunardi and Franck Perera won the 2015 GTC European title at the wheel of the n°59 BMW Z4 GT3 run by TDS Racing. The French team made it with four podiums and three pole positions, beginning their title quest right at the start with maximum points at Silverstone (pole position and win). The Italian race in Imola in May was their worst result as Ferrari and AF Corse took all three podium places on their home ground. With additional pole positions at Le Castellet and Estoril, a victory in France and two 2nd places in Austria and Portugal, the 100% ‘Made in France’ team won the GTC class with 101 points,  20 more than their Italian rivals. On top of this, with this result, French team now has an invitation to go to the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Am category.

AF Corse and Ferrari in the fight all the way

With three Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 full season entries, AF Corse took 2nd, 3rd and 4th position in the overall classification.

Francesco Castellacci and Stuart Hall finished 2015 as GTC vice-champions, sharing the n°62 F458 Italia at all of the five races and apart from the opening race at Silverstone where they failed to score any points, the Anglo-Italian duo can be proud of two wins in Imola and Red Bull Ring, one 2nd place at Le Castellet and a 4th place finish in Estoril. Their teammate Thomas Flohr did not race in Italy, and finished the season 4th in the driver classification. Rino Mastronardi, who drove with the team in Italy, was classified 8th.

At the wheel of n°64 AF Corse, Danish driver Mads Rasmussen and Portuguese Francisco Guedes are third in the championship, thanks to one 2nd place at Silverstone, two 3rd place results at Imola and Estoril, and 4th at Le Castellet. They didn’t score any points at the Red Bull Ring. The third driver in the team, Portuguese Felipe Barreiros, did not race at Le Castellet and finishes the season in 6th place in the driver classification. Adrien de Leener who took the wheel in France is 10th.

The n°63 AF Corse Ferrari takes 4th place in the Team classification while drivers Giorgio Roda, Marco Cioci and Russian Ilya Melkinov are 5th in the Driver Classification, thanks to a win in the season finalé in Estoril, a 2nd place result in Italy and a 4th in Austria. Unlucky in Silverstone, they didn’t gather any points at the first race of the season.

Aston Martin also active in ELMS

As a winner of several endurance races (2005 in Spa, 2008 in Monza, 2009 in Spa), Casper Elgaard has also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans LMP2 in 2009. In 2015 he decided to race in the European Le Mans Series with the sole full season Aston Martin Vantage on track, entered by Massive Motorsport Team. He drove the car with two other Danish stars : Kristian Poulsen and Simon Moller and they took two 3rd place results at the Red Bull Ring and Le Castellet.  However three non finish results blunted their championship aspirations and the All-Danish team is 5th in the team classification and the drivers are also 5th overall.

TF Sport entered a second Aston Martin Vantage in the GTC category in Estoril for the season finalé. The black Vantage was in the hands of Turkish driver Salih Yoluc, British driver Euan Hankey and one of the WEC rising stars Richie Stanaway, who has been selected by the WEC for a “Rookie Test Drive” at the wheel of an Audi R18 e-tron quattro LMP1 to take place in Bahrain on Sunday 22nd November. For their first drive in the class and in the European series, the team finished 5th, which gives them a 7th place in the team classification and 11th for the drivers.

Lamborghini with Gulf Racing UK in Silverstone

Besides entering the 2015 ELMS with a Porsche 911 RSR in the LMGTE category, Gulf Racing UK also entered a Lamborghini Gallardo LP650 GT3 in GTC for their home race at Silverstone. Roald Goethe (who is also the happy owner of a great Gulf designed cars collection that even raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans), Daniel Brown and Archie Hamilton did one only race in ELMS this season. They finished 3rd in Silverstone, and finish 2015 6th in the team classification and 10th in the driver’s list.

The winner of the GTC classification being invited to race at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, French team TDS Racing will have the honour to enter a car in the LMGTE Am category next June in La Sarthe.
