Rules 2012

The cars competing in the Le Mans 24 Hours are divided into 4 categories: LM P1 and LM P2 prototypes and LM GTE Grand Touring Cars. The first 2 categories represent the quickest cars. GT cars must be approved road-going vehicles of which at least 100 have been built and commercialised (25 in the case of small manufacturers). The field is divided into two categories: Am & Pro.
In 2012, European Le Mans Series allows only LM P2, GTE Am and GTE Pro, and also Formula Le Mans cars, prototype firstly buid as an one-make series by Oreca, and GTC, new category with GT cars from one-make series.

Air restrictors play an important role in the technical regulations. These are fitted in the inlet manifolds of all cars to balance out power, and their diameters vary according to the engine's architecture, type of fuel feed and type of fuel for the Prototypes and the weight for the Grand Touring cars.
